Our 2017’s grants programme enabled roughly 1000 children and young people to experience exciting, challenging and confidence building days out all over the UK. Trips from the autumn/winter season – all of which were chosen by the groups for the young people they support – were adventurous, fun, creative and hugely varied.
Each organisation benefited from a Day Trip Grant to cover or partially cover the costs of their day out. Activities included visits to the seaside, zoos, theme parks, a puppet show and rides on a canal boat and the Santa Express at Blaenavon Railway. Theatre shows and pantomimes took centre stage during the Christmas period and we were snowed under with wonderful stories and photos from so many of the trips!
We particularly loved reading about Step by Step’s day at 360 Play, a family entertainment centre in Stevenage which features indoor and outdoor play areas, sensory and soft play activities, a carousel and go-karting. The day trip was enjoyed by 30 children and young people with disabilities including Down’s syndrome, ADHD, Bipolar disorder and autism. Our grant went towards the costs of entrance fees and travel to and from the centre.
“It was so nice to be able to take the children out of the city for this trip and give them memories they will cherish forever. Thank you so much!”
Cassie Daniels, Development Manager
The charity reported that one huge success of the day was the level of engagement shown by one of the boys in their group. Due to his endless supply of energy, it can sometimes be a challenge for his mum to find safe environments that will hold his attention and simply allow him to be himself. The trip to 360 Play proved a great hit with him as there was so much to do. He was able to enjoy a day out with his carer and friends and take part in many activities – climbing, jumping and making happy memories together. Support workers from the trip said that when he got onto the coach at the end of the day he was exhausted and extremely happy!
“Thank you for taking me on my best trip! I jumped lots and lots!”
Step by Step is a north London charity staffed largely by volunteers from a community with an emphasis on charitable giving. You can read more about their work here.
Over the course of the year we heard time and time again that without our funding or the brilliant work undertaken by the front-line charities we support, many young people and families would not have been able to enjoy these special days out. Financial barriers, lack of resources and feelings of exclusion often mean that children with disabilities and life limiting conditions do not get to experience all the exciting things that make a childhood happy and fulfilling. It’s humbling to hear that our work has made a difference and we will continue to do so during 2018 and beyond.
